Carrot Recall: Bunny-Luv, Cal-Organic, and More Recalled Nationwide for Salmonella Risk

Grimmway Farms is recalling six carrot products nationwide because they may be contaminated with salmonella. The carrot recall includes products sold under four brand names: Bunny Luv, Cal-Organic, Grimmway Farms, and O Organics. 

All of the recalled products are baby carrots and shredded carrots sold under four different brand names, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recall alert. They all have best-if-used-by dates between August 9, 2021, and August 20, 2021.

The recalled products include:

• Bunny Luv Organic Cut and Peeled Baby Carrots, 1 lb bag
• Bunny Luv Organic Premium Petite Carrots, 3 lb bag
• Cal-Organic Organic Petite Carrots, 12 oz bag
• Grimmway Farms Shredded Carrots, 10 oz bag
• O Organics Organic Peeled Baby-Cut Carrots, 1 lb bag
• O Organics Baby Rainbow Carrots, 12 oz bag

For photos of the products affected by this carrot recall, as well as their UPC codes and best-by dates, check the FDA site here. The company also recalled some carrot chunks and other shredded carrot products, but those were only sold to food service distributors and food manufacturers. 

Salmonella is a bacteria that causes a foodborne illness called salmonellosis, the Mayo Clinic explains. Many people who have the infection have no symptoms at all. If the infection does cause symptoms, they typically include fever, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, nausea, headache, and possibly blood in the stool. For most people, the symptoms last between two and seven days, although the diarrhea may last a few more days.

In more severe cases, the diarrhea can lead to dehydration that’s serious enough to require hospitalization, the Mayo Clinic says. A salmonella infection can also spread outside of the gut and become life-threatening. 

There haven’t been any cases of illness associated with the recall to date, Grimmway Farms says. But if you’ve purchased any of the recalled products, you should discard them and not eat them.
